JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Jefferson County couple is facing charges after their daughter was hospitalized with a cut in her mouth, throat and esophagus, according to court records obtained by WVLT News.

It happened on July 1, warrants for Michala Annette Morgan Raines and Zechariah Donte Mills said. They also outline what investigators found.

According to the warrants, an officer responded to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital in Knoxville after getting a call from Child Protective Services (CPS). The officers said CPS told them hospital staff had found a “severe” cut on the child, who was 15 days old at the time. The cut was so bad, the warrants said, the child had to have surgery.
