Auburn football will be without one of its top receivers for at least the immediate future.

Head coach Hugh Freeze announced on Wednesday that Horatio Fields broke his foot during Tuesday’s practice and will have surgery on Thursday. He didn’t give a timeline for a potential return, but that kind of injury tends to be long term.

Sophomore Perry Thompson will step into Fields’ spot at receiver, Freeze said, and true freshman Sam Turner is another option. Through four games, Thompson has two catches for 11 yards.

Fields currently ranks third on the team in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns, trailing only Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr. Along with Singleton, Fields was one of Auburn’s two transfer portal signees at receiver this offseason after transferring from Wake Forest.
