California Gov. Gavin Newsom, during his Tuesday night appearance on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," expressed concern that the United States may not hold a presidential election in 2028.

“I really mean that—in the core of my soul,” Newsom told Colbert.

The California governor accused President Donald Trump of attempting to “rig the midterm elections,” citing efforts by Trump to pressure Republican-led states into redrawing congressional districts ahead of the 2026 elections. Newsom argued that these redistricting moves are designed to help Republicans maintain their majority in the House of Representatives.
