Leh, Sept 24: At least four people were killed and dozens, including 22 police personnel, were injured on Wednesday after statehood protests in Ladakh spiralled into violence. This marks the first major flare-up in the region’s ongoing agitation for constitutional safeguards and full statehood.
The protests, spearheaded by the youth wing of the Leh Apex Body (LAB), began as a shutdown and hunger strike but soon descended into chaos after agitators clashed with security forces in Leh. Demonstrators hurled stones at the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) office, prompting police to respond with teargas shells, baton charges.
