A $1.4 million cut in Texas Health and Human Services funding is forcing Cenikor Foundation to close its Amarillo detox and residential programs, prompting the nonprofit on Sept. 22 to ask Potter County commissioners for help to keep other recovery services running.

Regional Director Julie McCarty told commissioners the state’s five-year contract for Cenikor’s Amarillo facility was reduced by $1.4 million annually beginning Sept. 1. The cut will end inpatient detox, residential and recovery housing programs on Sept. 30.

“Over the past seven years, Cenikor Amarillo has had the privilege of providing services to more than 7,000 individuals,” McCarty said. “Every one of those numbers represents a human life, a family impacted, and a community made stronger.”
