Two German tourists were critically injured when they were struck by a driver in Midtown Manhattan right outside the flagship branch of the New York Public Library Wednesday afternoon, police sources said.
The two victims, a woman, 75, and a man, 55, both from Hamburg, suffered significant injuries when they were hit by the driver of a green minivan on E. 40th St. just west of Fifth Ave., sources said.
The driver fled the scene before stopping at W. 38th St. and Eighth Ave., cops said.
EMS transported the victims to Bellevue Hospital, where they were both in critical condition.
The driver was taken into custody shortly after the incident, cops said.
