PEORIA, Ill. (WJW) -- An Illinois man is in custody after he was charged in connection to the shooting of his ex-girlfriend this summer, the Peoria County State's Attorney said in a press statement.

Jaquon L. Timothy, a 23-year-old who was charged with aggravated battery of a firearm, allegedly carried out the shooting "as a way to prove his love to his new girlfriend," the state's attorney said.

Police were reportedly called to a residence in South Peoria on July 19 just before 1:30 a.m. after gun shots were heard in the area.
