NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (WTNH) — A lottery event was held Wednesday on the grounds of an old high school in New Britain.

The event offered home buyers a chance to hear their name called as the process starts to find occupants for the 11 single-family homes build on the old St. Thomas Aquinas High School property.

"This is what community development is all about," New Britain Mayor Erin Stewart (R) said. "And there are so many happy faces, and this is really transformative and there are a lot of happy faces here today, and I just feel really good."

City leaders say the vacant school was a dangerous eyesore and they're excited to welcome families into their community.
