GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Hurricane Helene hammered several counties in East Tennessee a year ago. In Cocke County, the Pigeon and French Broad rivers flooded to unprecedented levels, and in Greene County, the Nolichucky River swept away homes.

Gary Mooneyham had lived in his home since 2017, and it wasn't in a flood zone. He said that as the Nolichucky River rose on September 27, heavy rains fell overnight and into the morning, becoming a violent torrent never seen before. The decorated Vietnam veteran has spent the last year believing someone would help him rebuild, but it never happened.
