The Washoe County School District is looking at consolidating schools, shifting funds designated for building projects to buy books and cutting positions and programs as it faces an $18 million deficit next school year.
The deficit comes amid a projected enrollment drop of more than 1,200 students next year.
Declining birth rates, rising housing costs and private and charter school options are all affecting enrollment, Chief Financial Officer Mark Mathers told the school board on Sept. 23.
“There is some intense, complex analysis we are going through now,” Mathers said.
He said he brought the budget concerns to the board earlier than ever as tough decisions have to be made.
