Like a smoker resisting a cigarette, the Ontario Liberals must resist electing another tax-and-spend leader.

The harder, smarter move is to turn the party into one that represents taxpayers by promising to end irresponsible borrowing and cut taxes.

This is going to take willpower because the temptation of runaway spending is tough to resist.

Premier Doug Ford once blasted his predecessor’s irresponsible borrowing and high taxes. He vowed to put money back in taxpayers’ pockets.

“The party is over with the taxpayers’ money,” Ford once claimed.

However, seven years later, Ford is puffing from the same pipe. His government continues to borrow billions of dollars each year with no end in sight.

And the consequences are clear, as Ontario’s budget watchdog paints a grim picture.
