ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — Two violent crimes just days apart on Portland Avenue have neighbors worried about the future, and calling for better ways to steer young people away from trouble.

A stabbing that left a man dead and a shooting that hospitalized a teenager happened just days apart on Portland Avenue.

“It just doesn’t make any sense,” says Eddie Leonard, who works with special needs children. He worries about how the violence will affect their futures.

“They need to be educated on how to de-escalate grievances," he says. "Don’t take a knife or a gun or sell anything. All that does is make it worse.”

That sentiment echoes across generations.

“I was shocked,” says 19-year-old Osirus Shuri. For him, the crimes are unfortunate but also familiar.
