A Worcester man was sentenced to life in prison on Wednesday for a killing in July 2020 over what officials described as an argument about payment of a restaurant bill.

Leroy Thompson, 30, was found guilty in Worcester County Superior Court of second-degree murder and reckless endangerment of a child on Aug. 8 in connection with the incident, which officials said happened in a car with a child seated inside.

Thompson will be eligible for parole after 20 years.

The shooting took place on July 5, 2020, and killed Joshua Lopez, 24, also a Worcester resident.

He died the following day after being shot while sitting in the backseat of a car in the area of Almont Avenue.

“I hope today’s sentencing brings some measure of justice to the family and loved ones of Mr. Lopez,” Worcester County
