GRAND FORKS — Nine years ago, UND announced it was cutting the men's golf team.

The local golf community raised enough money to reverse that decision. Head coach Todd Schaefer built up the program.

This week, the Fighting Hawks made history.

UND won the nine-team Zach Johnson Invitational at Glen Oaks Country Club in West Des Moines, Iowa.

It was the first time UND has won a multi-team men's golf meet in the Division-I era. Its last win was September 2008 at Augustana, when it was transitioning from Division II.

"We've come a long way," Schaefer said. "We're doing our best to get better every year.

"They did something no Division-I men's team has done. They did something historical for our program. Naturally, it's pretty exciting."
