BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has added enhanced equipment at the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport as the agency continues to screen a surge of passengers.

A TSA spokesperson called a new piece of equipment an "advanced imaging unit."

The unit is said to be faster, more accurate, and more comfortable than the body scans the agency has been using.

With this unit, passengers will no longer have to raise their arms.

The spokesperson said upgrades like this one have allowed them to better implement new policies like the shoes-on policy.

"We've seen significant improvement in wait times, and happy passengers with the shoes on policy," Joubert Gervais, TSA regional spokesman, said,
