DES MOINES, Iowa —
Iowa Senate Republicans have elected Sen. Mike Klimesh as majority leader.
Klimesh will take over for Sen. Jack Whitver, who announced last week that he was stepping down as majority leader and not running for reelection in 2026. Whitver had been the majority leader since 2018.
“Leading a deep and talented group of senators is an honor, and with that honor comes a great responsibility,” said Klimesh. “I want to thank Jack for his years of service, his exceptional example as a leader, and most of all for his friendship. I can’t imagine anyone leaving behind bigger shoes to fill.”
Klimesh represents the Senate's 32nd District, which covers Allamakee, Clayton, Howard, Winneshiek, and part of Fayette counties in northeast Iowa. He was elected in 2020.
