PIMA COUNTY, Ariz. — The Pima County Health Department has reported the first West Nile virus-related death of the season, involving an older adult with pre-existing health conditions.
So far in 2025, there have been two confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in Pima County. One case had symptoms starting in 2024, and the recent fatal case highlights the ongoing risk, as the County also detected the virus in mosquitoes this season.
Mosquito-borne viruses are likely to be spread from May through October during the peak of mosquito activity in Arizona, according to Pima County officials.
West Nile virus is primarily transmitted through mosquito bites. While many infected individuals show no symptoms, some may experience flu-like symptoms, and in rare cases, severe complications can occu
