SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
A new Native American college at Sacramento State University is now open, making it a first-of-its-kind college in California, according to university leaders.
The school celebrated the grand opening of the Wileety Native American College and its inaugural cohort of 34 students Wednesday with a large gathering on campus.
Last fall, Sac State President Luke Wood and the new Native American college dean of students, Annette Reed, joined with other university and local tribal leaders to announce the creation of the college at the State Capitol .
Wileety, pronounced “Wuh-lehh-too,” is a Miwok term which means “to bloom, to be bright, to shine.”
