ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
The New Mexico Department of Transportation will be hosting free car seat safety checks statewide starting on Sept. 27 in recognition of National Child Passenger Safety Awareness Week.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of death for children under 15. The NMDOT has partnered with Safer New Mexico in order to help reduce the risk of fatal injury.
The New Mexico law requires children under the age of 7 or under 60 pounds to ride in safety seats. Children ages 7 to 12 must also ride in booster seats until an adult seatbelt fits them properly.
