SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State University officials increased campus security on Wednesday as a speaker from the conservative advocacy group Turning Point USA visited, following recent controversy and rising concerns over free speech on campus.

The increased safety measures came a week after backlash erupted when a student made remarks mocking the death of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk during a campus memorial event.

Video of that student got the attention of Gov. Greg Abbott, who subsequently called for his expulsion. Texas State University leaders later said that he was no longer enrolled.

The university also recently fired professor Tom Alter over comments made at a virtual socialism conference about overthrowing the government, further fueling debate over the boundaries
