Prominent Indigenous affairs leader Warren Mundine has blasted the inclusion of a question on Welcome to Country in the official citizenship test.
The test includes 20 questions on Australian life, culture and history and was updated in 2020 to include a section on Indigenous affairs and a question on Welcome to Country ceremonies.
But the practice is becoming divisive, with a poll conducted by the Institute of Public Affairs in June finding that 56 per cent of Australians considered the ceremony, which is currently performed ahead of many public and sporting events, divisive.
Mr Mundine said questions that asked participants the colours of the Aboriginal flag and who was allowed to perform a Welcome to Country ceremony served only to divide Australians.
