OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Driving down Blackstone looks a lot different now than back in the 1950s, the last time Omaha’s streetcars were operational.
Construction on the new streetcar led to the discovery of large sections of the old rails.
Workers cut them out of the ground before hauling them away.
Patrick Zach, president of the Blackstone Improvement District, wanted to bring some of those rails back to the are for preservation.
“My first thought was it’d be cool if they could just run the streetcar on those old rails,” Zach said. “Obviously that’s not an option.”
Zach told First Alert 6 his organization is still figuring out what they’d like to do with the rails, adding that he’s open to ideas from the community.
