OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - An assisted-living facility for veterans wounded in battle is now accepting applications.

“We are so proud to show what we are doing for our veterans. This is the first of its kind, by the way,” said Kate McCauley, president and CEO of Wounded Warriors Family Support.

It’s a place of honor — a home for those who lost multiple limbs or suffered traumatic brain injury.

“About seven years ago this was on our radar to build the Dunham House, in recognition of Corporal Jason Dunham who threw his body over a grenade to save his unit,” McCauley said.

The young American Marine was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for what he did at that Iraqi checkpoint 21 years ago.

After breaking ground in May , the Dunham House is now preparing to bring combat-wounded veterans
