YUMA, AZ (AZFamily) — Democrats marked a historic victory in Arizona as Adelita Grijalva won a special election to represent the state’s 7th Congressional District , becoming the first Latina elected to Congress in Arizona. Adelita Grijalva drew nearly 70% of the vote.

Grijalva succeeds her late father, longtime Rep. Raúl Grijalva , who was known for championing underserved communities. He maintained three congressional offices across the district to connect rural residents with federal services. One of those offices, in Somerton, has remained closed since his passing but could reopen under her leadership.

For many Somerton residents , the office was a lifeline. Local business owner Rosa Alonso said it’s been ideal to have the congressional office down the street from her business
