During his recent visit to the United Nations, US President Donald Trump reported several technical issues that he described as acts of "sabotage." These included a stalled escalator, a malfunctioning teleprompter, and audio problems in the auditorium. Trump recounted that the escalator stopped suddenly while he and First Lady Melania were using it, but they managed to hold onto the handrails and avoided injury.
He also mentioned that his teleprompter failed for about 15 minutes, which forced him to deliver his speech without it. Additionally, he noted that the sound system in the hall was not functioning properly, leaving many attendees unable to hear his remarks. Trump stated, "This was absolutely sabotage," referencing a report from The London Times that suggested UN workers joked about turning off the escalator.
At the end of his speech, Trump revealed that Melania, who was seated in the front row, told him she could not hear "a word he said." He referred to the series of technical failures as "triple sabotage" and expressed that those responsible should "be ashamed of themselves."
Trump has called for an investigation into the incidents, requesting that security footage from the escalator, including the emergency stop button, be preserved. He confirmed that the Secret Service is involved in the matter and stated he would send a copy of his concerns to the UN Secretary-General.
In response to Trump's claims, the United Nations issued a statement explaining that the escalator's safety mechanism is designed to prevent accidents. They suggested that the videographer may have inadvertently triggered this safety function, leading to the escalator's abrupt stop.
