Celtics and NBA legend Bill Russell, who died in 2022, is now formally immortalized in Boston after the city dedicated a bridge in his honor on Wednesday.

The newly reimaged North Washington Street Bridge is now named the William Felton "Bill" Russell Bridge. The $200 million project spans the Charles River and connects Charlestown to the West End and North End near TD Garden.

Wednesday’s ribbon cutting was attended by Russell's family, Celtics legends past and present and elected officials who spoke about how Russell's legacy still looms so large in the city.

"Bill Russell's name is synonymous with Boston and Massachusetts," Gov. Maura Healey said. "It's synonymous with Boston and Massachusetts working to get better, to create more opportunity, and in today's world, we need his example
