Glencore is being criticized for how long it took to notify health officials and people who live in Falconbridge about what it is calling “dust” that escaped from its smelter in the community this week.

Ward 7 Coun. Natalie Labbee, who represents Falconbridge on Greater Sudbury’s city council, and residents, are wondering why the company didn’t immediately issue a warning about the incident.

Falconbridge residents woke up Wednesday morning with dust containing black specks smeared on their vehicles, decks, gardens and homes. The dust began to escape on Tuesday evening, but Glencore did not notify Public Health Sudbury and Districts about the incident until late Wednesday afternoon.
