An overnight spell of very heavy rain caused waterlogging across most suburban towns of the district, including Uttarpara, Konnagar, Rishra, Baidyabati, Hooghly, Chinsurah and Bandel. Low-lying areas were inundated, forcing people to wade through knee-deep water, while many railway underpasses were completely submerged.
Train services on the Howrah–Burdwan main line, the chord line and the Howrah–Tarakeswar–Goghat route were severely affected. Daily commuters, who ventured out in the adverse weather, were stranded at various stations. According to sources, railway tracks in the Howrah carshed area were under water, which badly disrupted the normal movement of trains. Some commuters, fearing further delays, returned home midway. Local trains crawled along.
