Among the priorities San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie recently trumpeted for revitalizing downtown was the briefly mentioned building of a new park in The East Cut , a neighborhood south of Market Street transformed in recent years by new residential and office high-rises.

Nearly 20 years in the making and now tantalizingly close to becoming real, the $42 million-or-more project would transform a gritty, 2.4-acre swath of land under and around the elevated Fremont Street freeway offramp from Interstate 80 and a neighboring bus ramp, turning it into an expansive recreation and community-gathering space for people and dogs.
