A young Victorian man given bail to attend a family funeral, despite having 67 prior convictions for breaching intervention orders and stalking his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, has abandoned his appeal against his jail sentence.

The 19-year-old, who cannot be named to prevent identifying his ex-girlfriend, sat tearfully in the dock of the Mildura County Court on Thursday as he was told he faced a longer term of jail if he proceeded with the appeal.

Last month, he pleaded guilty to common law assault, persistent breaches and contravention of a family violence order, and breaching bail.

Still, he launched an appeal against his four-month jail sentence.

He was granted bail while he waited for the appeal to be heard in the higher court.
