A P-plate driver has been fined thousands of dollars after he was caught speeding at West Wallsend at more than 150 kilometres per hour.

Lake Macquarie highway patrol police stopped a silver Ford Falcon at about 5.30am on Tuesday, September 23, after clocking it tearing along the M1 Pacific Motorway outside Newcastle at 153 kilometres per hour.

Police discovered the 20-year-old man behind the wheel was on his green P-plates, meaning he was limited to a maximum speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

Officers issued the man with a fine of $3054. He also notched six demerit points for being a P2 driver exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 kilometres per hour, as detected by LIDAR.
