On Saturday, Sept. 13, the Wolverine Division of the Sea Cadets gathered in the gymnasium of the H building at Monroe County Community College to raise the colors.
It was a drill weekend for the division, where they gathered to raise the American Flag at 9 a.m., as they would on a real Navy ship, and engage in activities together such as flying drones through an obstacle course.
The Sea Cadets are a federally chartered youth development program with an emphasis on leadership development, according to the division's commanding officer, Daniel Sydes. Though the program aims to emulate Navy life, and many of the adult instructors are ex-military, the cadets are not a recruitment program for the U.S. Navy.
