Arizona State’s 24-20 loss at Mississippi State was a blow to Big 12 pride. The Southeastern Conference’s apparently-worst team, beating the highest-ranked Big 12 team. But ASU’s loss also was a sign that the Sun Devils might not be championship caliber in the post-Cam Skattebo era.

Skattebo led Arizona State to the Big 12 title and a near-upset of Texas in the College Football Playoff last season. Now he’s a New York Giant tailback, and the Sun Devils are trying to scratch back from that loss in Starkville, Mississippi.

But a funny thing about ASU’s demise. It’s quite possibly premature. We don’t know yet how good Mississippi State might be — the Bulldogs are 4-0 — but Arizona State won 27-24 at Baylor last week and Friday night hosts 24th-ran
