MURFREESBORO, Ark. ( KAIT /Gray News) - A family found a 2.79-carat diamond while on a birthday trip.

Raynae Madison and her family traveled from Cookson, Oklahoma, to Arkansas to celebrate her nephew’s birthday.

During their visit, they decided to make a stop at the Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas.

The family bought beach digging tools and sifters from a dollar store and started digging near the park’s Prospector Trailhead.

After digging and sifting through a few bucketfuls of dirt and rocks, Madison noticed “an unusual oblong, shiny stone.”

“At first I thought it looked really neat, but I wasn’t sure what it was,” she said. “I honestly thought it was too big to be a diamond.”
