Fleming, N.Y. — A Cayuga County man was injured this week after he fired a handgun at a street sign and accidentally shot himself, according to State Police.
Just after 3 p.m. Tuesday, troopers responded to Riester Road in the town of Fleming for a man who had a gunshot wound, Trooper Lynnea Crane, a State Police spokesperson, said in a news release Wednesday.
The man — Bryon Wiler, 55, of Auburn —accidentally shot himself in the arm, Crane said.
Wiler shot at a street sign with a 9mm handgun — illegally in his possession — and inadvertently shot himself, she said. The wound was not life threatening.
Troopers found he was also driving drunk, she said.
Wiler was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon , fourth-degree criminal mischief and driving while intoxicated.
