Starbucks is cutting hundreds of jobs as it looks to make changes to its coffeehouses, including eliminating pick-up-only locations in dozens of states.

The coffee chain announced that it would be reaching out this week to coffeehouses scheduled to close, as well as eliminating about 900 non-retail jobs, according to a news blog by Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol , released on Thursday, Sept. 25.

About 1% of its locations in the U.S. and North America will be closing, Niccol said.

People whose roles are being eliminated will be notified on Friday, Sept. 26, and the company will offer "generous severance and support packages including benefits extensions," Niccol said in the blog.
