VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) is warning families and staff about a recent scam targeting members of the school community.

According to the school division, a parent reported receiving a phone call from someone pretending to be a VBCPS staff member. The caller allegedly knew the student’s name, grade level, and school, and claimed to be offering SAT preparation materials. The caller then requested credit card information to “hold” a $250 fee. The call reportedly came from a 757 area code.

While similar scams have surfaced in the past, officials say this attempt is especially concerning because of the level of personal detail the caller used and the impersonation of a school staff member.
