Ladakh activist and scholar Sonam Wangchuk on Thursday denied allegations of inciting violence in Leh. Wangchuk said, “I am being made a scapegoat. This will not improve the situation, it will only make it worse.”

On the night of 24 September, the Ministry of Home Affairs had held Wangchuk responsible for the violence in Leh. The government had said, “Wangchuk incited the crowd with inflammatory statements, broke his fast amid the violence, and instead of trying to control the situation, left for his village by ambulance.”

Meanwhile, the CBI has begun investigating Wangchuk’s NGO, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives Ladakh (HIAL), over foreign funding issues. The government has revoked the NGO’s license for foreign funding.
