The Supreme Court has highlighted the need to revive the practice of day-to-day hearings in particularly sensitive cases, observing that its abandonment over the years has contributed to delays in the justice system.

The bench made this remark while hearing a petition challenging the Kolkata High Court’s decision to grant bail in a rape case.

The court stated that the right to a speedy trial, enshrined under Article 21 of the Constitution, requires urgent attention.

A bench comprising Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice KV Viswanathan directed all High Courts to constitute committees to explore ways to implement daily hearings in their respective district courts.
