This National Latino/Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to thank people in Reno for supporting immigrants.

Countless examples of people stepping up for our immigrant friends, families and neighbors remind us of the value immigrants bring to Reno and the United States. They strengthen our communities through farming, childcare, health care, business, education, military service, the arts, culture and the fabric of daily life.

While we celebrate these contributions, we must also confront darker chapters to understand the threats of today: The internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, the treatment of Chinese immigrants after the transcontinental railroad and discrimination against people of Mexican descent.
