A Newburgh man is accused of kidnapping and raping a woman and holding her against her will at a shack in the woods in July.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said Joseph Menefee, 56, of Newburgh, was arraigned Sept. 23 on an indictment charging him with first-degree kidnapping, 14 counts of first-degree rape, two counts of predatory sexual assault and one count each of first-degree assault, second-degree assault, first-degree coercion, first-degree unlawful imprisonment and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies.
According to documents filed and statements made in court, Menefee approached the woman on a street in the City of Newburgh and offered her food and a place to stay.
