DES MOINES, Iowa —
Friends and loved ones of Santiago Rhone, a 15-year-old Des Moines East High School student, gathered at the school's baseball field for a candlelight vigil to honor his memory.
Rhone was killed Saturday night when he was hit by a motorcycle while crossing a street.
Santiago was a sophomore at the high school and made the varsity baseball team as a freshman.
A memorial for him was set up on home plate during the vigil, where attendees held a moment of silence before releasing balloons. They were also invited to share messages to Rhone, affectionately known as "Santi."
There were also balloons with the number 7 and number 23, for his baseball and football jersey numbers.
