IDAHO CITY, Idaho — A section of State Highway 21 north of Grandjean will close for emergency repairs starting on Thursday, Oct. 2 after recent landslides caused damage to the road.

According to the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) , the nearby creek's movement is now eroding the road. ITD is installing a six-foot culvert, a drain underneath the road, to divert the water back to its original location.

Burn scars from the Wapiti Fire damaged the slope near the road, causing more instability. Canyon Creek was diverted to the east side of the highway, which adds to the erosion.

The department initially scheduled repairs for Oct. 7. Additional rainfall throughout the week destabilized the nearby land, which could trigger mudslides that pose a threat to drivers and workers.
