The Mining Remediation Authority has revealed new evidence of historical mining at the site of a sinkhole in Darwen. The emergency services were summoned to Greenfield on the newly built Taylor's Field housing estate on Sunday (September 21) morning, after residents discovered a massive sinkhole had appeared on one property's driveway.

Local residents who had opposed the Pole Lane housing estate claimed they had previously warned about the potential presence of old mine workings on the site. However, when the Mining Remediation Authority checked historical records, only three mine shafts were identified, none of which could have caused the sinkhole due to their positioning.

Efforts are now underway to fill the sinkhole with 600 tonnes of aggregate sourced from Ramsbottom
