HUNTINGTON, W.Va . (WSAZ) -The West Virginia Bureau of Public Health is alerting people to an outbreak of hand, foot, and mouth disease statewide.

In 2025, a total of 38 hand, foot, and mouth disease outbreaks have been reported, including 17 outbreaks since September 1, 2025, according to the WVBPH.

The West Virginia Bureau of Public Health said it is a common viral illness that primarily affects infants and children, with typical seasonal increases during the summer and fall months.

Health officials said the virus is highly contagious and can spread through contact with droplets containing virus particles when a person coughs or sneezes. It can also be picked up from touching surfaces that have virus particles.

Symptoms of hand-foot-and-mouth disease include:
