Northampton County might furlough 175 human services workers if the state legislature doesn’t approve a budget soon, according to the county executive.

That’s more than half of the county’s 250 human services workers, Northampton County Executive Lamont McClure said in a statement issued Thursday. They include child welfare caseworkers, mental health crisis workers and aging services workers, according to a news release from their union.

The state legislature is approaching three months since the June 30 deadline to pass a budget and there’s no agreement in sight.

The furloughs would take effect Oct. 20 without a budget resolution, according to the news release from SEIU Local 668.
