CLEVELAND (WJW) - The city of Cleveland has approved a plan to reduce the speed limit on Lake Avenue from 35 mph to 30 mph, a change many residents say is long overdue.

“I see how people drive through here currently,” Finn O'Hern said. “It’s all about safety — they have school kids and all that around here.”

The reduction will stretch from West 75th Street to West 117th Street at the Lakewood border. Ward 15 Councilwoman Jenny Spencer said the decision followed a traffic study and review by state officials.

“Municipalities must do speed and traffic studies and then go through ODOT’s process,” Spencer explained, adding that “even just a five-mph reduction in speed can make a tremendous difference in traffic safety.”
