MADISON (WKOW) — The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H5N1) in a commercial poultry flock in Jefferson County.

The bird flu case has prompted a joint response with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to contain the outbreak. The affected site has been quarantined, and all birds will be depopulated to prevent further spread. Officials assure that birds from this flock will not enter the food supply, according to a press release.

HPAI H5N1 is highly contagious and often deadly to domestic poultry. DATCP urges livestock owners to enhance biosecurity measures, such as washing hands, disinfecting equipment, and keeping new animals separate for at least 30 days.
