A California judge who fatally shot his wife during a 2023 argument has been sentenced to 35 years to life in prison. Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, 74, was convicted of second-degree murder and gun enhancements after prosecutors said he pulled a gun from his ankle holster and killed his wife, Sheryl, during a dispute over family finances.

Ferguson, who had been drinking, later texted colleagues, “I just lost it. I just shot my wife.” Despite his claim that the shooting was accidental, the judge overseeing the case said the evidence was “overwhelming” and prosecutors called it “cold-blooded murder.”
