EDNA, Texas — The man accused of killing an Edna, Texas cheerleader in December 2023 was handed two life sentences on Thursday, one for murder and one for aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Romero was charged with capital murder after the shocking stabbing death of 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina. Jacqueline Medina found her daughter's body in the bathtub of their home a few weeks before Christmas.

"Every single day, reliving what happened and what I saw when I found her," Medina said.

She and other family members gathered for a prayer vigil before the sentencing hearing at the Jackson County Courthouse.

Medina said she only learned about the plea bargain on Monday. She was hoping for the death penalty.
